Hunter Brown

Electronic Music Production & Performance

Hunter Brown is a Berlin-based composer, improviser, and sound artist who tutors in the Electronic Music Production & Performance programme at Catalyst. His work treats the infrastructure of digital audio — codecs, machine listening, analysis, [re]synthesis — as material for reorienting the act of listening. He works across acousmatic composition, music for instruments and electronics, multichannel sound installation, music for dance, and custom real-time computer music systems.

Improvisation is central to Hunter’s performance practice. He regularly performs with his Improvisation Instrument, a custom system developed in SuperCollider, both as a soloist and in collaborative projects including Technical Reserve and Other Plastics. His work has been presented at Ars Electronica, Darmstädter Ferienkurse, Big Ears, Cafe OTO, IRCAM Manifeste, and the High Zero Festival.

Hunter is also a freelance audio engineer, serves as technical director for Ensemble Dal Niente, and co-founded the record label Party Perfect. He has taught electronic music at the Oberlin Conservatory and the University of Chicago, where he is a PhD candidate in music composition.
